What does growth mindset look like in a classroom?

First, what is growth mindset?

Growth mindset is a type of thinking that sets a perfect environment for learning. It can be seen in a couple simple sentence changes. For example...

Instead of "I can't do this" students should say "I can't do this yet".

It could be misconstrued as being a mindset of an blind optimist but trust me when I say it's still realistic. Students should realize they're not good at something but the important part is that students don't give up at an obstacle, they should realize it's not the end all be all. If a student hasn't understood a concept this mindset gives the idea of improvement. In an earlier thesis I explored what happens when teaching students who don't want to learn. What I found is that if a student doesn't believe they can learn then they won't. It doesn't matter if you are the best teacher in the world and do all the right techniques we have to guide the students towards confidence first. That's what growth mindset is all about.

SO the idea of growth mindset is great but how can teachers actually implement a mindset into the classroom?

  • confidence, have students come up with mantras that instill confidence and self respect

  • self reflection, this is understanding what they are good/not good at yet

  • have students understand how they learn and give them tools to have control over their own learning
